How to Get an Accurate Reading From a Pedometer

A pedometer is a handy tool that can help you to record how many steps you're taking each day. By using a pedometer, you can easily determine when you have increased your daily activity and by how much. Depending on your model of pedometer, it may simply record steps, or it may give you more detailed information including distance walked and calories burned. Regardless of the type of pedometer you use, it is important to ensure that you are getting the most accurate reading possible.

Instructions

Wear your pedometer correctly. The most accurate location for a pedometer is on your hip at the side of your body or on your leg just above the knee.

    • 2

Take several practice steps, counting as you go. Stop at about 50 steps and compare your count with the reading on the pedometer. If the reading is incorrect, experiment with different placements until you find a spot that gives you an accurate reading.

Visit a local track and walk the required number of laps to equal 1 mile or 1/2 mile. Take note of the reading on your pedometer at this point. Most conversion systems consider 1,000 steps to equal 1/2 mile and 2,000 steps to equal 1 mile. If your mile requires a drastically different number of steps, keep this in mind when calculating the distance you've walked.

Do the majority of your walking on hard, even surfaces. Stairs and slopes can affect your pedometer reading as your steps may register incorrectly in these situations.
