How to Figure the Stride Length for a Pedometer

Fitness experts recommend that adults walk 10,000 steps daily, or approximately five miles, to maintain good health and fitness. A pedometer that counts steps and distance can be a useful tool in measuring progress toward this goal. However, the accuracy of a pedometer depends on getting an accurate measure of stride length---the distance from one step to the next. Stride length varies from one person to another, depending on height, leg length and walking style. By calculating individual stride length, walkers can better estimate total distance covered.

    • 1

Measure out a distance of at least 20 feet in a straight line. The longer the distance, the more accurate the stride length calculation. Record the distance in inches.

    • 2

Mark the start and end of the distance with tape. If possible, leave enough space before the start line to get up to speed and enough room after the end line to complete a natural stride.

    • 3

Walk the distance at a natural pace.

    • 4

Count all steps that fall within the pre-measured area. For greater accuracy, repeat this step three times and use the average count.

    • 5

Divide the distance, in inches, by the number of steps taken. This is the stride length. For example, an individual who takes eight steps over 20 feet (240 inches) would have a stride length of 30 inches.
