How to Figure Out the Draw Length for Bows

Archery can be a very rewarding sport, but can also be frustrating if you do not have the properly sized equipment. Draw length is a very important factor when choosing a compound bow. If the draw length is too long, it can lead to an inaccurate shot and poor form. It will also result in the string slapping against your wrist. This can be very painful.

To avoid these complications, be sure to carefully determine your draw length and choose a bow that fits your body size.

Instructions

  1. Arm Span Method

    • 1

Stand naturally with your arms parallel to the ground. Be sure to face your palms forward so your thumbs are facing the sky.

    • 2

Measure from the end of one middle finger, across the chest, and to the end of the other middle finger. A friend can help with measuring. This will determine your arm span.

    • 3

Divide the arm span measurement by 2.5; that is your draw length.

    Alternative Method

    • 4

Hold the bow straight with your fist pressed against the wall.

    • 5

Align the tape measure with the wall and hold it parallel along your arm.

    • 6

Measure from the wall to the corner of your mouth. You can have a friend help out with this step. This measurement is your draw length.
