How to Find a Draw Length

The draw length is the distance between the grip and nock point when the bow is held at full draw. Determining the appropriate draw length for an individual is accomplished through minor adjustments or a specific measurement. The adjustment approach works well with adjustable-draw compound bows that are capable of quick changes to the length. The accurate measurement system is more appropriate for finding the exact draw length and making a single adjustment during the initial string installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand against a wall and spread both of your arms out to the side. Level the arms with your shoulder and straighten your elbow.

    • 2

Have a friend mark the tip of your longest finger on each arm. Use a pencil to avoid making a permanent mark on the wall. Relax your position.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the two markings and record the inches. Divide the total number of inches by 2 1/2. The result is your natural draw length.

    • 4

Set the bowstring to match your draw length. The process for stringing the bow changes based on the style and model. Draw the bow and hold the draw position to determine the level of comfort. Slowly return the string to the resting position.

Make small adjustments to the length based on your level of comfort. Some archers prefer a slightly shorter draw while others go slightly longer. The original measurement is comfortable for most archers.
