One of the reasons that treadmill routines become boring is that you do the same thing over and over. On most treadmills, both the speed and incline are adjustable. If your treadmill has a programmable setting, you can set it to random, which will automatically adjust speed and incline. You won't know what's coming next, so you have to stay on your toes.

Listen to music or watch TV. If listening to music, choose music that is upbeat, which can help you to walk faster without trying hard. Television shows are the perfect thing to watch during a workout. Sitcoms run between 20 and 30 minutes, and longer dramas are between 40 and 60 minutes. Simply exercise for the length of the show.

3
Read a book or magazine. Some treadmills have a place to hold books or magazines. But be careful that you're still getting a good workout. When reading and exercising, you may go slower than you should.

4
Learn while you burn. Use your workout time to learn something new. Instead of listening to music, listen to a book on tape. Alternatively, consider learning a foreign language. Purchase a study program that includes a CD or MP3, and practice the pronunciation of foreign words.

Challenge yourself to improve your fitness level. Keep a note of your current records: top speed, calories burned, and longest workout time. Pick one of them and try to beat it. If you usually do your treadmill workout at 3 mph, increase it to 3.5 mph for a few minutes of your workout.
