How to Measure A Walking Route

Go old-school and use a printed map to figure the length of your route. Trace your route, measure it with a ruler and compare the length with the distance scale included on the map.

Walk your route with a distance-measuring pedometer. Set the pedometer to your stride length and make sure to keep an even stride while walking. Multiply the number of steps by the stride length to find the total length of your walk.

Use your car to measure your walking route. Set your trip meter to zero. If you don't have a trip meter, write down the beginning mileage reading. If you need to, subtract the beginning mileage from the end mileage. The difference is the distance of your walking route. If your walk takes you places you can't go in the car, use the pedometer method to measure it.
