How to Find Stride Inches

The length of space that you travel in two steps is your stride. Finding the length of your stride in inches is useful because this calculation can be used as a basis for measuring. For instance, if you know how long your stride is, you can estimate the length or width of an area. You can also keep track of your walking distance if you are using a pedometer to keep track of the number of your steps.

Instructions

  1. First Method

    • 1

Stand on a sand or dirt surface with your heels together.

    • 2

Take two steps forward, one with your left foot and one with your right.

    • 3

Use a tape measure to measure (in inches) the distance from your heels' prints at your starting point to your toe prints at your ending point. This is the length of your stride.

    Second Method

    • 4

Measure and mark a specific distance. For example, mark a starting point, measure 50 feet and mark an ending point. If you measure in feet, multiply the number of feet by 12 to get the number of inches. For example, 50 feet multiplied by 12 gives you a result of 600 inches.

    • 5

Position your heels on the starting line and walk to the ending point. Count your steps as you go.

    • 6

Divide your total number of steps by 2 to find how many strides you took.

    • 7

Divide the distance in inches by the number of strides that you took. This will give you the length of your stride.
