How to Calculate Step Length

Joggers, walkers and hikers use pedometers to determine how far they have traveled. However, before you can start using a pedometer, you must input the step rate or stride rate. A step is the length of a single step, measuring from the heel or toe of one foot to the heel or toe of another foot. A stride is twice as long, measuring a complete step of the left foot and a complete step of the right foot. Once you have calculated your step or stride length, input it according to the pedometer manufacturer's instructions.

Instructions

  1. Calculating Step Length

    • 1

Place a marker on the ground next to your heel or your toe.

    • 2

Take 10 steps forward, using the approximate length that you would while walking, hiking or jogging.

    • 3

Place your other marker at your heel or toe at the end of your 10 steps.

    • 4

Measure the distance between the markers.

    • 5

Divide this distance by 10. This is the length of one step.

    Calculating Stride Length

    • 6

      Calculate your step length.

    • 7

Multiply your step length by 2. This is your stride length.

    • 8

Use this alternative method: divide the length of 10 steps by 5 to calculate your stride length.
