How to Do a Backfist
Instructions
-
-
1
Begin in a fighting karate stance with your guard up.
-
2
Make a loose fist with your forward hand.
-
3
Move your arm at the elbow, keeping everything behind the elbow still and only moving your forearm. Don't cock your wrist as this will give away your intent to use your backfist technique.
-
4
Choose your target. Backfists are aimed at the side of your opponent's head or your opponent's face. The nose is best, but you can aim for the cheekbone, philtrim (the skin between the nose and upper lip) or chin.
-
5
Turn your hand so the back of your fist faces your target. Just before making contact, whip your fist back to deliver a blow with the back of your knuckles.
-
6
Retract your fist at the elbow as quickly as possible.
-
7
Try a back spinning backfist. Move your front foot toward your center line and turn your body 360 degrees before striking your opponent to give your fist extra momentum. Aim for the temple or jaw to deliver a knockout blow.

Remember the groin. A low backfist to the crotch will disable a male karate opponent who was too busy anticipating a kick to see it coming.
