How to Earn Your Belts in Karate

Belt rank in karate is simply a gauge of progress, a set of clearly defined benchmarks on your quest for mastery. Though the concept of black belt is often wrapped in a sort of mystic sense, the process is simple. Not easy, mind you, but simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Start taking classes. You'll want to shop around at first to find an instructor whom you can work with well.

    • 2

Understand the requirements. Most schools have a list of specific requirements for each belt level. These requirements usually include grasping specific techniques, demonstrating levels of physical fitness and attending a minimum number of classes or time in the previous rank. Sometimes, steps also require scholarship, community service and personal growth work.

    • 3

      Attend class regularly.

    • 4

Practice at home. A minimum of 20 to 30 minutes each day you don't attend class is recommended.

    • 5

Keep your eyes on the prize. As you near the end of any time requirements, focus on the specific demands of your next belt level. Work hard on any material you feel weak on.

    • 6

Many karate schools hold promotion ceremonies or formal tests for each new belt rank. When you feel ready, talk to your teacher about committing to the next scheduled event.
