How to Do the Wu Tang

The Wu Tang is a dance that originated in northern Philadelphia. The dance is often performed to Baltimore club-style hip-hop music and has numerous improvised variations. The style is competitive and requires skill and creativity; the goal of a dancer is to outperform other dancers.

Instructions

  1. Basic Technique

    • 1

Relax your body completely--it's important not to be stiff. Spread your legs shoulder-width apart and bend your knees until you're in a sitting position. Keep your torso lifted and your stomach pulled in.

    • 2

Clench both your fists with your palms facing downwards, pull your elbows back and hold your clenched fists by your waistline. Listen to the rhythm and move your body by bouncing your knees up and down.

    • 3

Raise both your fists up toward your shoulders at the same time and bring them down together.

Lift your right fist slightly above your waist and bring it down. Bring your left fist up slightly above your waist and bring it down. Raise both your fists up to your shoulders and bring them both down to your waist.

    • 4

Repeat the four basic steps several times until you have memorized the routine.

    Variations

    • 5

Raise each fist twice and bring it down. Twist your waist and hips from side to side as you raise your fists and bring them down for a more exaggerated variation.

    • 6

Cross your legs backwards one leg at a time or do the moonwalk in between the basic steps.

Once you have mastered the basic movement, you can incorporate some improvised moves between the basic steps.

    • 7

Include a cartwheel or do one or two splits before going back to the basic steps. Be playful and expressive--the goal is to have fun, demonstrate your dance skills and entertain others.
