How to Wear Grappling Gloves

When you're in the ring fighting a difficult opponent, wearing your grappling gloves correctly is vital for avoiding injury. Grappling gloves are a specific type of glove used in mixed martial arts, or MMA, fighting. There are three main types of grappling gloves used for different purposes: sparring, bag and fight gloves. By correctly wearing the gloves, you will protect your hands from costly and fight-delaying injuries.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the correct gloves for your purpose. Bag gloves have heavier padding used for hitting punching bags and striking pads. Designed for practice fights, sparring gloves have less padding than bag gloves. Fight gloves for professional competition have slightly less padding than sparring gloves.

Slide your hand into the glove.

    • 3

Slip your fingers through the finger holes and your thumb through the thumb hold (if the glove has a thumb hold).

    • 4

Secure the Velcro wrist wrap tightly around your wrist. Check to make sure that the wrist wrap covers your wrist past the bone.

    • 5

Make a fist in the glove. Move your fingers around in the glove as well to test your maneuverability. Properly-fitted gloves allow you to move freely.
