How to Replace Power Trim Fluid in a 40 HP Evinrude Outboard

The maintenance schedule for the 40-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor requires you to inspect the level of hydraulic fluid in the power trim/tilt system monthly. When the fluid level is low, replenish it. The schedule also dictates that you inspect the overall system and, if necessary, replace the power trim fluid yearly, or every 100 hours of operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a suitable drainage container beneath the drain valve located on the bottom of the hydraulic reservoir. Open the filler cap on top of the reservoir. Open the drain valve and drain the hydraulic fluid into the drainage container.

    • 2

Close the drain valve on the hydraulic reservoir. Pour hydraulic fluid into the reservoir through the filler until the fluid reaches the bottom of the filler's throat. Leave the filler cap off the filler.

    • 3

Turn the key switch to the "On" position. Raise and lower motor five times using the tilt/trim system.

    • 4

Inspect the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir. If the level is below the bottom of the filler throat, add fluid. Continue to cycle the tilt/trim system and add hydraulic fluid to the reservoir until the fluid level remains at the bottom of the filler's throat after five cycles.
