How to Add Hydraulic Oil to '96 Javelin Boats

When you need to add hydraulic oil in your 1996 Javelin boat, you need to know where to put the oil, and what to do when you find it. Like most boats, the oil needs to be checked often -- every time you prepare to go boating. You also need to perform the lubrication service on your boat once for every 100 hours you run the boat. On the Javelin, this means you need to check the hydraulic oil for the steering system and the system that tilts the motor up and down and operates the trim tabs.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the hatch just above the point where the steering column penetrates the dashboard. Unscrew the top of the filler spout inside the hatch. Add hydraulic fluid through the filler spout. The fluid should reach the bottom of the filler spout.

    • 2

Turn on the ignition switch and turn the steering wheel from side-to-side at least five times. Add hydraulic fluid after each turn until the fluid level remains at the bottom of the spout. Recap the tank and close the hatch on the dash.

    • 3

Locate the two interconnected, hydraulic-expansion tanks on the port side, which is the left side as you face forward in the boat. Unscrew and remove the cap on top of the rear of the forward tank. Raise and lower the motor no less than five times using the trim and tilt control.

    • 4

Raise and lower the trim tabs no less than five times using the two toggle switches on the dashboard. Add hydraulic fluid until the level of the hydraulic fluid remains even with the bottom of the filler spout.

    • 5

Operate the trim switches, adding hydraulic fluid after each up-and-down cycle until the hydraulic fluid level remains at the bottom of the filler spout. Recap the hydraulic-expansion tank.
