How to Replace the Tiller End Cap on a Hobie Cat
The EZ Loc tiller of the Hobie Cat doesn't have an end cap, but the "pre EZ-Loc" tiller extension has a plastic end cap with a ring set parallel to the centerline of the extension tube. A plastic part, this end cap suffers damage akin to that inflicted by a saw when salt and the friction of a rope through the ring combine. The end cap is easily replaced with a few tools.
Things You'll Need
- Drill
- 3/16-inch bit
- Replacement end cap (Hobie part No. 10560000)
- 3/16-inch stainless steel bolt
- 3/16-inch stainless steel lock nut
- Adjustable wrench
- 3/16-inch pop rivet
- Hand riveter
Instructions
-

1
Drill out the rivet that holds the end cap in place in the tube of the tiller extension, using a 3/16-inch bit and drill. Remove the rivet and end cap.
-
2
Insert the new end cap into the tiller extension tube. Hold the end cap in place with one hand. Drill through the existing 3/16-inch hole in the tiller extension -- the hole you drilled to remove the rivet -- and the new end cap.
-
3
Thread a 3/16-inch stainless steel bolt through the hole in the tube and the end cap. Thread a 3/16-inch stainless steel lock nut onto the end of the bolt and tighten snugly with an adjustable wrench.
