Cub Scout Resident Camp Checklist

Cub Scout resident camps allow Cub Scouts to experience camping in nature and include outdoor and merit badge activities. They are often held at primitive camping areas that require the troop and scouts to bring most supplies. Prepare a checklist to ensure that your Cub Scout has everything he needs to enjoy and participate in the camp.
  1. Clothing

    • Pack clothing to last the duration of the stay, as there will likely be no washing facility. Necessary clothing items include shorts, pants, shirts, a sweatshirt, rain gear, hat and hiking boots. Place all clothing in water-tight storage bags to protect it in case of rain. Pack an extra change of clothing in case the camper becomes wet.

    Cub Scout Items

    • Cub Scout gear is needed to participate in many of the activities in a resident camp. Most camps make it mandatory to bring the Cub Scout handbook and other related merit badge books. Pack a book on identifying wildlife, such as trees and birds. Also include the Cub Scout uniform so your scout can take part in any ceremonies that will be held during camp where members receive badges and awards.

    Camping Gear

    • Camping gear needed for a Cub Scout resident camp depends on the camping area; some have bunk houses and other requires campers to bring tents. Pack all gear needed to provide the most comfort, including a sleeping bag, tarp to place under the tent, air mattress and small tools to build the tent such as a hammer and pliers. Many camping items are optional but make a welcome addition, including camp fire roasting forks, bug repellent, strike-anywhere matches, sun screen, flash lights, folding chairs and a camera.

    Recreational Gear

    • Recreation is a major part of Cub Scout resident camp. Campers are encouraged to bring their own recreational gear, which includes fishing tackle, hiking gear, swim suit, sports balls and any other outdoor-related activity gear that can be shared as a group. Pack a board game or activity that campers can utilize to pass time during bad weather. If authorized, also pack a pocket knife.
