Instructions for the Coghlan's Tent Pole Repair Kit

Tent poles get subjected to abuse just by the nature of their design and where they are used. When tent poles crack, break or have the internal bungee cord rip, repairs are necessary. Coglan's sells a small, self-contained repair kit specifically for tent pole repairs. Inside the kit, you'll find a length of bungee cord, pole ferrules, repair sleeves and repair wire. To take best advantage of the gear in the kit, it helps to have a multi-tool in your camping kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Pop out the top end of the tent pole to be repaired and untie the bungee cord. Pull the cord out of the pole. Cut out a length of the shock cord from the Coglan's kit in the same length as the tent pole cord.

    • 2

Hold the lighter over the cut ends of the cord to melt them down and prevent frays. When cool, push the cord up and through each rod blank in the pole and tie the end to the tip of the pole where you removed the damaged cord. Reassemble the tent pole with the new shock cord.

    • 3

Inspect the damaged pole for cracks around the edges where each rod blank connects. If cracks are present, slide a ferrule (a metal sleeve that fits over the tent pole) over the end of the damaged section of pole. Push it firmly onto the pole and then reassemble the pole with the ferrule over the damaged end.

    • 4

Slide washers under the ferrule if the ferrule is too large in diameter for your pole. The washers add extra width to the pole, allowing the ferrule to fit snugly onto the pole. Coglan's includes washers to accommodate a variety of tent pole diameters.
