How to Make Homemade Sleeping Bags for Kids

Making sleeping bags, especially for kids, is an inexpensive way to add adventure to sleepovers and birthdays. Kids of all ages derive a sense of adventure when sleeping in a sleeping bag -- even when they are inside the house. Because less genuine insulation is required, making a kid's sleeping bag can be accomplished with a sewing machine and an expendable quilt or comforter that has one side slicker than the other.

Things You'll Need

  • Twin quilt, bead spread or comforter

Instructions

    • 1

Place the quilt on a table or other flat surface. Fold the quilt over lengthwise.

    • 2

Stitch the bottom edges of the folded quilt using a sewing machine. This creates the bottom of the sleeping bag.

    • 3

Hand-stitch the closed end of a 72-inch sleeping bag zipper to the bottom edge of the folded quilt.

    • 4

Sew the two zipper fabric strips to the corresponding edges of the folded quilt.

    • 5

Pull up the zipper to verify that it closes properly.
