How to Make a Homemade Flag for Flag Team

Making your own colorful flags for a drill team or color guard saves money and ensures that no other team will have your exact flag. The colorful flags flown on football fields and basketball courts during halftime not only add flair to a routine, but show off a team's colors. While flags for this purpose are available commercially, premade flags may not suit the team and custom orders may be out of a team's budget. With a little creativity, homemade flags will fly proudly on the field.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure silk, satin or light canvas material to the desired size of the flag and add 1 inch to the width and the length of the project plus 2-inches to the length for the pole loop. This will accommodate the hem as well.

    • 2

Turn over a 1/2-inch hem along the length sides, then the width. Hold in place with sewing pins as you go. Use heavy duty thread on a sewing machine equipped with a heavy duty needle to sew down the hem around the edges.

    • 3

Fold over 2-inches on one end of the length and sew down. This creates the opening for the flag pole.

    • 4

Create stripes for the flag. Cut strips of contrasting colors to the length of one side of the flag. The width is dependent on the desired size of the stripe. Add 1-inch to the initial width and length of the stripe for the hem. Turn 1/2 inch hem around the entire strip of material and glue down with fabric glue. Create multiple stripes to add more color to the flag.

    • 5

Arrange the colorful stripe onto the flag in the desired pattern. Align the ends of the stripes with the edges of the flag. Pin down and sew in place with heavy duty thread. Add as many stripes as desired in any pattern.

    • 6

Paint a symbol on the flag. Use fabric paint to create a team logo or other design, if desired.
