How to Find the Right Size Canoe Paddle

Selecting the right size canoe paddle is important. A paddle that's too short will prevent you from achieving a full paddling stroke, which is inefficient and forces you to make more strokes. A paddle that's too long is awkward in hand and difficult to switch from port side to bow side. A properly sized paddle will be far more comfortable and less fatiguing than an improperly sized one. You can select a paddle that's the right length right for you by making a measurement.

Instructions

    • 1

Kneel on the floor with your buttocks about 6 inches off the floor, which is about the same distance from a canoe seat to the floor of a canoe.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the floor to your nose. A partner is helpful for this task.

    • 3

Record this measurement. This is the approximate shaft length, but not overall length, for a proper-fitting, straight-shaft paddle.

    • 4

Deduct 2 to 4 inches from this measurement if you want a bent-shaft paddle.
