How to Use the Pirana Descender

The Petzl Pirana Descender is a friction based rappelling device. When used properly, the Pirana Descender allows rappels and usage in tight spaces; as such, the Pirana is considered a safe option for canyoneering. As a friction device, when the climbing and rappelling ropes are threaded properly throughout the Pirana's holes, the ropes slow via friction on the device when weight and tension is added. Climbing and canyoneering are inherently dangerous activities and require a great deal of training. Do not attempt to use the device without proper training and guidance.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip the Pirana to the climbing harness via a locking carabiner. A carabiner is a metal hinged-gate device in the shape of a D or oval. Make sure your carabiner has a locking barrel and that it's turned all the way to the locking position and then back one quarter turn. The Pirana attaches to the carabiner at the harness front waist loop.

    • 2

Bring your rope down through the top hole of the Pirana. Loop it out through the bottom hole and then through the carabiner. Bring the rope back up and through the bottom hole on the Pirana, making sure that it rests over the curved lip on the bottom of the device.

    • 3

Grip the rope leading to the anchor or cliff top with your dominant hand. Reach behind you and grip the rope dangling below and under the Pirana with your other hand.

    • 4

Lower off the canyon wall and slowly add weight to the device. Feel for the rope to engage on the metal loops of the Pirana. To go down and rappel, ease the grip on the upper rope. Wear gloves during the rappel as friction burns are severe and lead you to let go of the rope, a potentially deadly situation.

    • 5

Grip the bottom rope and pull it up to waist height when you need to slow or stop the rappel. During a temporary stop, bring the bottom end of the rope up to the Pirana and loop it around the bottom curved lip twice to create an anchor and stop on the rope.
