How to Install a Brinks Keyed Entry Door Knob

Installing a Brinks-keyed entry door lock can bring you peace of mind, but just how easy is it? You’ll have to have quite a variety of different tools to get the job done, but the job itself is actually quite easy, perhaps even easier than you might think. You’ll need to follow a few simple steps to get your new Brinks-keyed entry door lock installed.

Things You'll Need

  • Variable multi-speed drill
  • Hammer
  • Tape measure
  • Pen or pencil
  • Razor knife
  • 1/2-inch-wide chisel
  • 1-inch-wide chisel
  • Variety set of spade drill bits
  • Variety set of hole bore saw bits
  • Center punch or ice pick
  • Drop cloth
  • Old lipstick or a bright crayon
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Straight screwdriver
  • Brinks-keyed entry door knob

Instructions

      Open your package and pull out the instructions. You’ll want to lay out all of your parts that came with your Brinks-keyed entry door lock. Make sure to study all diagrams that come with the package.

      Inside of the instructions there will be a lock template. You’ll need to tape this to your door, making sure to line up the marks on the diagram with your door edges. This will ensure that you will have your door lock even and straight. You’ll then need to mark the centers of the area in your lock set to drill with a center punch. Assemble a hole bore set of drill bits and attach to your drill.

      Starting with a slow speed, drill the door facing the mark you made with the center punch. Keep the drill straight and level then speed up the drill as the bore makes contact and the pilot drill enters the door. When you are halfway through the door, slow down after the pilot bit cuts through the other side of the door. Stop and pull the bore bit out and slowly drill the other side, aligning the pilot with the hole made from the other side. When completed, remove the hole bore bits and attach the appropriately sized spade bit to drill the striker/plunger lock assembly.

      Use the marked hole made earlier by the center punch and drill into the side edge of the door, starting slowly and keeping the drill level and straight. Using the template, mark the plunger attachment point and cut out with a razor knife on the edge. Cut to proper depth with the chisels. Make sure to also mark the two screw holes with the center punch.

      Assemble the lock to the door by installing the plunger first and attaching it with the wood screws from the lock. Put the key lock side on the outside of the door and the knob side on the inside. Attach the two knobs together with the machined screws provided in the lock.

      Using the lipstick or crayon, color the plunger well and close the door. The color will transfer to the door frame, showing you where to mark the strike plate.

      Center punch the center and two screw holes and use the template to draw out the size and cut out with the razor knife. Cut the depth with the chisel and hammer. Attach the strike plate with the screwdriver and screws provided.
