How to Make a Real Dart Gun

A dart gun can fire a dart with great force if the firing mechanism is sufficiently powerful. You can make a real dart gun that can be used for target practice and that is not designed to be made or used by children. You will need a few supplies commonly found around the home as well as some items from a hobby shop. Your dart gun will fire a projectile with enough force to penetrate many objects, so exercise proper care when using it.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the disposable plastic pen by the eraser end in one hand. Hold the pliers in the other hand. Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the metal barrel at the pointed end of the pen. Twist the pliers to pull the metal barrel off.

    • 2

Shake the pen to dislodge the ink tube. Grab the ink tube and pull it out of the pointed end of the pen. Pull the spring out of the pointed end of the barrel. Dispose of the ink tube, spring and metal barrel in the trash.

    • 3

Hold the disposable plastic pen by the pointed end in one hand. Hold the pliers in the other hand. Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the end cap at the eraser end of the pen. Twist the pliers to pull the end cap off. Dispose of the end cap in the trash.

    • 4

Cut off the black cap from the end of the foam dart with the scissors.

    • 5

Unscrew the metal point of the dart from the dart’s handle with a counterclockwise motion. Dispose of the dart’s handle in the trash.

    • 6

Pull the tip off the Nerf-brand single shot gun’s barrel with the pliers. Dispose of the tip in the trash.

    • 7

Apply bonding glue around the inside of the open end of the barrel. Insert the eraser end of the pen into the barrel. Let the bonding glue set for two hours.

    • 8

Insert the back end of the metal point into the pointed end of the pen. Pull back on the cocking lever at the back of the gun to cock the firing mechanism.

    • 9

Aim at a soft target so that the dart is less likely to ricochet back at you. Pull the trigger of your dart gun to propel the dart at the target---do this in your back yard or some other open space where no one can get hurt.
