How to Make a Blow Dart Gun

Using a blowgun is easy and fun. With a little practice you can achieve great accuracy, shooting at targets--and only targets! It's a great twist on the classic darts game. And with just a few basic tools you can make your own blowgun and darts.

  • Small-diameter curtain rod

  1. Blowgun

      Cut a 12- to 18-inch section of curtain rod, taking care not to crush or bend the tube as it is cut.

      Use a file to ensure that the ends of the tube are smooth and free from jagged edges that could cut your mouth while using the gun.

      Sight through the tube to make sure it's free from obstructions or kinks that might impede the dart's progress.

    Blowgun Dart

      Thread various pieces of yarn through the eye of a darning needle and tie the yarn in place.

      Use scissors to trim away any excess yarn and to make sure that all the yarn is cut to the same length (approximately 2 inches).

      Unravel the yarn fibers tied to the needle in order to create a single mass of fibers. When the dart is inserted into the blowgun these fibers will compress and form a plug that will prevent air from moving past the dart.

      Check the size of the dart by inserting it into the blowgun. If necessary, add more yarn to the dart by repeating Steps 1-3.
