How to Make Your Own Rod Tube

Rod tubes protect valuable fishing rods. It is true there are many options available for buying rod tubes and cases, but making one out of some inexpensive materials saves money that may be better spent on new fishing gear or a getaway trip. PVC is a hard plastic tube that makes an excellent choice for rod tubes. Construct PVC rod tubes in a home workshop, and use them to protect your rods as you head out for fishing fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Break down your rods and measure the longest rod of the bunch. Add 3 inches to the measured length. For example, if you have a rod that measures 30 inches, use 33 inches as the length for the rod tube.

    • 2

Measure and mark the distance on the PVC tube. Use a bench vise to hold it in position, and saw the tube at the measured mark. Sand down the cut end for smoothness.

    • 3

Add glue to the end of a pipe cap and glue it on one end of the PVC tube.

    • 4

Trace the other pipe cap on a chunk of foam. Cut the traced circle from the foam. Glue it to the base of the pipe cap. Use this for the top of the case. Don't glue it into the rod tube. Push it in and pull it out when using the rod tube.

Insert the rod(s) into the fashioned rod tube, and plug the top with the foam-cap topper.
