How to Make Eye Placements for Jigs on Homemade Lures
-
What Are Jigs?
-
Jigs are mainly used to fish for bass and crappie in the winter. When the winter months set in, the fish start to hang out at the bottom of the lake. The fish acclimate to the cold water and their metabolism slows down. The jig will float toward the bottom of the water body to attract the fish.
Selecting Colors
-
The best way to determine the color of your jig is to make a note of the surrounding where you are fishing. If you are fishing in a lake or a pond, use a dark colored jighead. Brown, black and dark green are good options. if you are fishing in a river, go with a lighter colored green or a lighter brown. If the river bottom is made up of clay, choose a jighead that is orange.
The Skirt
-
The skirt is one of the most important pieces of the jig because it masks the jighead. Replace the original skirt if it does not match your new jighead. Feel free to mix and match different colors from your skirt and jighead. This will give your new jig an authentic look to attract the fish.
Replacing the Jighead
-
Choose a jighead that you want to use as a replacement. Jigheads can be found at local fishing shops or sporting goods stores. The most common jigheads are about 1/16th of an ounce to 1 ounce. Use your fingers to remove the skirt from your original jig. Remove the rubber band from your jig and then pull the skirt off of the jig. Roll the rubber band back onto the jig’s skirt. Push the rubber band and the skirt onto the new jig head. Push the skirt up to the top of the jighead to complete the replacement.
