The Best Way to Store a Backpack

The backpack is designed to handle everyday abuse while carrying a load. The fabric on most packs is durable and the stitching is tight. The biggest threat to the backpack often occurs during storage. Storing the pack while traveling is more difficult than in the home, since the risk of theft and damage are present.

Select a storage location inside of your house or apartment. Choose a dry area and attach a hook to wall. Remove heavy contents from the backpack and hang the top loop on the nail. Weight stresses the stitching and may damage the backpack during long-storage periods.

Cover the backpack with a plastic trash bag for outdoor storage in wet weather. Store the backpack inside of a tent or under a tent rain fly. Place a barrier between the bottom of the backpack and the ground to prevent moisture absorption. The moisture increases the weight of the pack and damages gear inside of the pack.

Store the backpack on the ground, at your feet while traveling on a bus, train or plane. Pull the zippers to the top and connect the zippers with a small lock. The top position makes the lock visible and discourages theft. Tie a leash to the pack and wrap it around a post or your leg for additional security.

Remove food items from the backpack for long term storage. Vacuum crumbs from the interior and store the pack off the ground. Rodents will enter the backpack, eat the food and make a nest if the backpack is not clean and hung above the ground.
