How to Secure a Hame Tip to a Walking Stick

If you have the urge to stroll about town like a fine old gentleman or refined lady, consider adding a hame to your hiking or walking stick. A hame is a brass fixture taken from old horse tack, although today hames are made specifically for walking sticks. Traditionally made of brass, the hame rests on the top of the walking stick or cane and is used to grip while walking with the stick.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the walking stick into the vise or attach to C-clamps on a work bench. Keep the top end of the cane or stick facing out so you have access to the top.

    • 2

Sand down the top of the stick to the point where the hame ends when fit over the top of the cane. Use the course sandpaper first to remove large spurs or knots, then use the fine sandpaper to refine the edges and top.

    • 3

Apply a thin coating of wood glue over the top of the walking stick and the inside of the hame.

    • 4

Slide the hame over the top of the walking cane. Align it to your preferred angle.

    • 5

Tap one or two wood brads onto the side of the hame and into the walking stick. Align the brads so they are at 180 degrees from each other on either side of the stick.

    • 6

Polish the brass hame with a brass cleaner and shammy to remove smudges and excess glue.
