How to Repair Backpack Rings

Old style external frame backpacks use a series of pins and rings to hold the fabric packs on the metal frame. These rings and pins are commonly referred to as "clevis" pins. Taking trips into the backcountry means hitting rough conditions and potential snags on the gear. Bring a small repair kit, or at least a multi-tool and some duct tape, to repair any snafus to the rings and pins while stomping around in the backcountry.

Things You'll Need

  • Multi-tool with pliers
  • Spare pin and ring (advised)
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the pin thoroughly and find any breaks in the rings metal or sticking where the ring meets the pin. Rings are threaded into the pins at a small hole in the bottom of the pin and are pinched or compressed to secure them.

    • 2

Insert the tips of the pliers from the multi-tool in the center of the ring and then expand the jaws on the pliers to pry open the ring. Pull the ring out of the pin. If you have a spare pin and ring with you, thread the new ring through the pin and pinch it closed using the pliers' jaws.

    • 3

Pinch and mold the old pin if you have no replacement. Mold it as close to round as possible, and rethread back into the pin, after placing it into the backpack and frame mounting holes.

    • 4

Wrap two coils of duct tape around the end of the pin, where the ring connects. Push the pin and duct tape combo back and forth several times to add flex to the field repair, allowing the pack to move as close to the design as possible.
