How to Tie a Wild Rag Square Knot

Watch an old cowboy western movie and you might spot a wild rag. Worn around the neck, cowboys often wore wild rags for sun protection. Wild rags are also referred to as bandannas, or cowboy bandannas. The wild rag is commonly made from lightweight natural fiber materials such as silk. Tying a wild rag around your neck is done with the use of a simple knot.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a wild rag in half to create a triangle. Bring one corner across to the opposite corner to form the triangle shape.

    • 2

Hold the ends of the wild rag triangle with the middle point above your chest. Pull the ends around your neck.

    • 3

Pull the ends back around to the front and form a square knot to secure the wild rag in place. Tie the knot by holding one end in each hand.

    • 4

Pass the right end over and around the left end to form a basic overhand knot. Pass the right end over and around the left end once again to form the square knot.

    • 5

Adjust the distance of the square knot in relation to your throat so the wild rag is comfortable. Pull on the ends of the wild rag to tighten the knot.
