Children interested in learning how to ride a horse have many opportunities around the Palos Verdes area in California. There are numerous horse camps designed just for youngsters that teach students not only how to ride a horse, but how to feed, groom and care for one, too. Many of these day-camps also include other activities, such as arts and crafts, for a full camp experience.

    • Located in Walnut Creek, this camp offers children 5 to 15 years old the opportunity to learn a variety of horsemanship skills, including horse safety, grooming, tacking, riding and more. Through it all, the day camp focuses on maximum time spent with the horses. "Our goal is to give each student an idea of what if means to own their own horse," the camp's Web site reads. A 5-day camp for the summer of 2010 cost $485.

    Skyline Ranch Equestrian Center

    • This Oakland Hills horse camp is open for children 6 to 11 years old. Students will learn English horseback riding, as well as how to groom, feed and bathe the horses. The week-long day camp, which cost $500, also includes arts and crafts projects for students. Overall, the camp aims to give "children a solid foundation in horse riding and care, while encouraging safe and confidence-building fun at the barn," according to its Web site.
