1
Choose the head design, then trace the design onto a large piece of steel stock, using a permanent marker. The head should be a taper approximately 5 to 6 inches long, with 3 inches between the base of the tip and 4-inch flanges at the bottom.
-
2
Cut the spear out by using any type of saw that includes a metal-cutting blade, such as a band saw. A cutting torch can also be used but does not provide as much precision.
-
3
Grind the edges of the head of the spear on both sides using the bench grinder. This will help to create a sharp point and cutting edges. Be careful not to grind the flanges.
-
4
Cut a 1/4-inch by 5-inch notch into the end of your spear handle, using a saw with a woodcutting blade. Place the spear into the notch, then drill three evenly spaced holes through the wood and into the metal. Carefully attach the thread bolts into all three holes and fasten them with nuts. Be sure not to over-tighten them.
-
5
Test the spear on a target before you take it on your first hunt to be sure it is sturdy and securely made; a poorly made spear can be quite dangerous on a wild boar hunt. You can try it out on a variety of different targets such as a bale of hay, a tree, a gunny sack filled with stuffing or even a store-bought target.
