How to Determine Paddle Sizes for Kayaks and Paddlers

The length of your kayak paddle can affect the handling, speed and balance of your kayak. Kayak paddle length should be determined by the height of the paddler and the length of the kayak. The standard range for most kayak paddles is from 210 to 240 centimeters. The differences within this seemingly short range translate to significant changes in control and paddler effort. The process of selecting the proper paddle for you and your boat involves determining boat and paddler measurements as well as paddling style.

Measure your torso height using your tape measure. Sit in an upright position and place the end of your measuring tape between your legs and against the surface of your chair. Stretch the tape upward and hold it against the tip of your nose when facing forward with your head level. The resulting number is your torso size for the purpose of paddle selection. Use your measurements to find the proper size paddle using a sizing chart (see Resources).

Measure a given paddle to see if it can work for you. Stand the paddle on end and stand up straight next to it. Reach up with one arm and try to close your fingers over the top of the blade. If you cannot reach the top, the paddle is too long. If you can reach over the end with more than just your fingers, the paddle is too short. If you can grab the end with your fingers, the paddle may work for you. Another method of paddle measurement involves holding the paddle in your hands with the palms up and elbows bent. Move your arms apart until they create almost a 90-degree angle with one another. If your hands are spread about two-thirds of the distance between the dead center of the shaft and the start of the blade the paddle may work for you.

Determine the width of your kayak. Refer to a kayak width chart for the general sizing rules to be followed (see Resources). Most kayaks will have their dimensions stamped on the inside of the boat near the seat. If you are not sure of the width of your kayak, take the measurement yourself. Stretch your tape measure from one side of the hull to the other without bending. Measure the distance between the two farthest points at the center of the kayak. Wider boats may add to the necessary length of your paddle so you can reach around the hull. Narrower boats may decrease the necessary length of your paddle.

Visit an online automated paddle fit guide (see Resources). Provide all the requested information including what type of paddle you require, low or high angle, blade size, shaft style and thickness, material, your height and the boat width. The system will factor all of these variables and provide you with the recommended size and style of paddle for you. Use these recommendations to purchase any properly sized paddle from any manufacturer or retailer.

Make sure the paddle is right for you no matter what the sizing charts say. The rare retailer will have on-site demo capabilities. If your retailer does not, first make sure of the return policy. Purchase the paddle and take it to the water for a trial run. If it does not work for you in any way, bring it back and make a change. Do not kayak with a paddle that does not feel right for you.
