How to Repair a Crank in a Shimano Deore LX

Shimano LX components are made for mountain biking. The LX cranks are the large metal arms the pedals attach to and lead to the chainrings. When the cranks are turned the bicycle is propelled forward. Over time, the bottom bracket -- the cylinder that the cranks attach to -- loosen. This leads many to believe it is the cranks themselves that need repair. To repair wobbly cranks, the solution is in tightening the bottom bracket. Repair the wobbly and knocking cranks in a few moments of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the bicycle in a work stand or against a rack or static object. Wipe off any grit, grease or debris from the crank area.

    • 2

Insert one Allen wrench into the center hub screw on the drivetrain side of the cranks. The drivetrain side is the side with the chain, gears and chainrings.

    • 3

Place the other Allen wrench into the hub nut on the opposite side of the cranks. Place counterclockwise pressure on this crank and place clockwise pressure onto the opposite side crank. Tighten the cranks as tight as possible.

    • 4

Remove the wrenches and grip the cranks and pull them back and forth listening for any clunking noise or side-to-side movement. Make tightening adjustments until all wobble and knocking noise is gone. This process tightens the cranks and bottom bracket.
