How to Install a Shimano Pedal Clip

Old-style bicycle pedals, some made by Shimano, used a toe clip that looks much like a small cage. These clips attach to the front of the pedal and keep the toe box of the shoe securely fastened to the pedal platform. For older Shimano pedals that have lost their clips, install a new set of clips onto the pedal. Adding the clips give the power transfer on the pedal stroke an added bump in power and movement.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the clip next to the front of the pedal. Make sure the cage portion of the clip is above the pedal base and then align the screw holes on the clip to the screw hole attachments on the front of the pedal.

    • 2

Place a small dollop of bicycle grease onto the threads of the clip attachment screws. Insert the screws into the clip and pedal holes and turn them to the right to tighten them down and secure the clip to the pedal.

    • 3

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the opposite side pedal and clip.

    • 4

Place your foot into the pedal and clip cage and pull the nylon strap to tighten or pull up and back on the metal thread piece to loosen the cage and clip.
