How to Put a Kick & Go Chain on the Scooter

Kick-and-go style scooters use a heel plate where a chain connects. Kick down on the heel plate and the chain moves, propelling the scooter forward. There are different chain style scooter makers and each has its own method of protecting the chain. Various chain guards or plates attach to the side of the scooter to keep the chain free from pant legs or grime. Changing the chain means going through the guard. When the chain is old, rusty or stretched, it is time to replace it to regain the scooter's performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a hex wrench into any hex screw on the guard plate protecting the chain. Unscrew the screws and remove the guard.

    • 2

Slide the chain tool over a link on the chain, aligning it over the link pin. Turn the chain tool handle clockwise to push the link pin out of the chain. Unwrap the chain from the gears on the scooter.

    • 3

Wrap the new chain around the gears and align the two ends of the chain together.

    • 4

Push the link pin into the connected ends and align the chain tool over the pin. Turn clockwise to push the link pin into the link until it is locked into place.

    • 5

Grip the chain where the new link pin is attached and move the link up and down to loosen and break in the link attachment.

    • 6

Screw the guard plate back into position on the scooter. Turn the scooter upside-down.

    • 7

Press the heel plate several times to get the chain moving. While the chain is moving, squirt lubricant onto the chain to prepare it for use.
