How to Install a Rail Spike

Model railroads are often small-scale projects for a child or a railroad hobby enthusiast. They can also be elaborate, large-scale projects that can take up an entire room if the space is available. Each piece of a model railroad is designed to mimic a life-size rail system down to its smallest item. Tiny rail spikes are used to set the track onto the track ties. You can install the rail spikes with little difficulty.

      Draw out your track design for your model railroad on paper. This will serve as a blueprint for laying the track. Glue your road bedding to the train table or surface corresponding to your blueprint. Road bedding is generally cork material that is glued to the table or surface where you place the railroad.

      Stencil the track placement centered on the road bedding using a section of track as a guide. The road bedding needs to extend at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch out on both sides of the track. Trim your road bedding to suit your design if needed with a sharp knife.

      Set the tracks onto the road bedding corresponding to your blueprint. Connect the tracks together. Since all model railroads vary in construction, consult your instructions for connecting the tracks together properly.

      Place model glue on the bottom of the railroad ties. Fit the rail spikes into the provided holes on the railroad ties. Set the railroad ties across the tracks into the provided grooves, unless they are already set in place by the manufacturer. Push the spikes in until flush with the top of the railroad ties using your thumb.
