1
Practice putting at home or other locations by using a glass or cup as your hole. Set up in an area where you can practice putting long distances. Learn to hit the ball squarely using the middle of your putter, using the middle line or "sweet spot" on the putter as a guide.
-
2
Work on hitting the ball with smooth, even stroke and at a moderate speed. Start with short putts from couple of feet away and work your way out to long putts from 15 to 20 feet away.
-
3
Learn to play angles and caroms when practicing. Set up thin flat pieces of lumber along walls and in the middle of your putting area. Learn to read what path the ball takes when it hits at a certain angle and speed.
-
4
Walk the course ahead of time before playing or make mental notes when playing. Notice where the hills and valleys are, where the obstacles are placed, and what type of shots are needed to make each putt.
-
5
Check with the course to see whether you can use your own putter while playing. Many courses allow this practice. Choose a good putter from the course's available selection if they do not allow players to bring their own. Look for a putter that is relatively free of chips and scratches and feels balanced in your hand.

Remember to have fun. It's only a game.
