Camping

Whether you are traveling in an RV or carrying a trunk full of camping tents and equipment, Huntsville State Park will suit your family's needs. The state park features 182 campsites equipped with electricity and water. The campground encompasses over 2,000 acres and is located six miles southwest of Huntsville. You can rent paddle boats and canoes or enjoy a family horseback ride with a guided tour from the on-site stable in the park. At the end of the day prepare a family cook-out at one of several picnic areas that are equipped with barbecues.
Hiking and Biking

If your family enjoys hiking and biking, you will find several trails in the local area. Hiking and biking is permitted on all portions of the 28-mile Star Hiking Trail. Your trek will take you through some thick brush and swampy areas to catch some views of rabbits, deer, turkey and quail. The state park has an 11 mile trail that circles around the lake. You can also ride your bicycles around the city of Huntsville on its bicycle-friendly streets.
Museums

Spend a day acquainting the family with Huntsville and Texas history. Head out to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum featuring two period-furnished homes in a complex that includes eight different buildings.The Veteran's Museum of Texas-Hearts preserves the memory of war veterans with war artifacts, photos and other memorabilia from past wars. The Texas Prison -- which originated in 1848 -- is represented with a museum including several displays including old-ball-and-chains and the electric chair that was in force between 1924 and 1964. The museum also displays a replica of an old prison cell as well as actual crafts the prisoners produced.
Fishing

Take the family out for a day of fishing. Lake Raven, located in the State park, requires no fishing license to cast your line. Limits are imposed on certain types and lengths of fish and require releasing. Rent a boat from the park for your day of fishing -- with only a few areas where you can fish successfully from shore. Make sure all are wearing life preservers and enjoy a family day touring the lake and admiring the many vistas.
