Physical Activities Around Archbold, Ohio

Being healthy and active does not have to mean routine boredom at the gym if you live in or near Archbold, Ohio. Archbold is a tiny town of fewer than 5,000 people, but it has a wide variety of physical activities to choose from both outdoors and indoors. Check out all your town has to offer.
  1. Biking

    • Take the kids out for a weekend bike ride.

      Archbold's topography is very flat, making it ideal for long bike rides or for a novice cyclist. With only two slight hills along the north and east side of town, it's easier to spend the whole morning and afternoon on a bike ride. For people that are new to biking as a form of exercise or those who want to explore the town with their kids, shorter rides around town are ideal. If school is not in session, dismount at Archbold High School and try out the outdoor track and tennis courts. Nearby, at Memorial Park, are volleyball courts, baseball fields and basketball courts. Get a group of friends or the family together for a weeknight softball game or a round of Horse.

    Walking and Hiking

    • Goll Woods State Nature Preserve is home to some of the oldest trees in Ohio.

      There are various parks to walk and explore in Archbold. The town's gem is the 27-acre Ruihley Park. The park offers a wide variety of walking paths. Bring a swimsuit on your walk and cool off at the Archbold swimming pool or stop and take in the scenery and play a round of horseshoes at one of the horseshoe pits.

      Archbold's newest park, Woodland Park, lies on 60 acres. The park has various walking trails that lead to playgrounds, basketball courts and the flag football field.

      A little further out of Archbold you will find dense woods for hiking and trail walking. Check out the 321-acre Goll Woods State Nature Preserve. Enjoy the preserve at your own pace or take advantage of the nature preserve's walking tour along the Cottonwood Trail.

    Other Outdoor Recreation

    • Try your hand at fishing.

      There are various horse farms around Archbold that offer horseback riding lessons for beginners, trail riding and lessons.

      If horses are not your thing give scuba diving a try. About an hour south of Archbold, in Ottawa, Ohio, take a dip in Ottawa's Gilboa Quarry and explore the 14+ acre limestone quarry. Find such treasures as sunken cars, motorcycles, boats and a variety of fish.

      If driving an hour is out of the question, go fishing for bass, bluegill and channel catfish in Archbold's reservoirs. If you're new to the sport or area, contact one of the local guides before heading out as there are certain rules and restrictions that must be followed.
