1
Select a container to hold all of your picnic set supplies. This container must be large enough to fit everything you'll want to take on your picnic, including plates, utensils, cups and a blanket, as well as the food and drinks, for everyone attending the picnic. Use a traditional picnic basket with a closing lid. For a portable picnic set, use a backpack. While this isn't a basket, it's easy to carry over your shoulders and will zip closed.

2
Add plates to the picnic set. Don't pack ceramic plates, which can break along the way. Instead, invest in durable plastic plates that can be washed and reused.
-
3
Add utensils. A fork and knife are essential at most picnics, although a spoon can come in handy, too, for dishes such as yogurt. Select utensils to serve the food, such as a serving spoon or salad forks. Place all the utensils in a plastic sealing container to keep them organized and clean.
-
4
Put some cups in the picnic basket set, too. Buy cups that easily stack into each other so they take up less space in the basket. Plastic cups are ideal, because they won't easily break and can be reused.
-
5
Buy napkins. These can be cloth or paper. If you're picnicking with children or dining on messy foods, add a few wet hand and face wipes into the basket set.
-
6
Add accessories according to the foods and drinks you'll be serving. If you're taking a bottle of wine, pack a bottle opener. Coffee drinkers must pack a thermos and tin coffee mugs to keep their drink warm.

7
Select a picnic blanket to complete your picnic set. This fabric should be lightweight and lined on one side with plastic to protect against damp grass. Choose a blanket that's large enough to fit everyone in the group. Roll the blanket into a tube and place it through the handles of the basket or through an outside loop on the backpack.

Place all the equipment inside the basket, starting with the plates flat against the bottom. Put the cups in facing upright. Save room by placing the utensil bag inside the top cup. Disperse the thermos, wine bottle and any other heavy items evenly in the basket so it's balanced when carried. Place the food on top of all the supplies so it doesn't get damaged.
