How to Make Poles for a Tarp to Use With Camping
Tarps are versatile pieces of camping gear. When used with poles, guy lines or a combination of both, the tarp can be used for many purposes. Make your own tent poles to accompany the tarp for custom fits. Tent pole supplies are available at most major outdoor retailers, allowing you to select the diameter of your choice. The process takes about an hour and is easily done in a home workshop.

1
Set out the pole rod blanks in the order they are to be used in the assembly. Set one bottom tip and one top with each grouping.
-
2
Push the rod blanks together at the telescoping ends. Measure the length of the assembled poles and cut a piece of the shock cord one inch shorter on each end. Disassemble the poles. Thread the cord through the top pole rod and tie the cord to the tip so the knot rests on the inside of the rod blank.
-
3
Thread the cord through each pole rod until you reach the last rod. Tie the cord to the pole tip and insert the tip into the pole.
-
4
Make as many poles as needed, and fold them up and place them in the stuff sack if desired.
