How to Fix Tears in Tents

Because most modern tents are made from lightweight nylon, they are susceptible to damage from sharp stones, branches or pointed objects. When the tent is damaged, it is wise to repair it as quickly as possible to keep the tears or rips from getting longer or deeper. Keeping a tent-repair kit available in the backpack or home workshop allows for fast repairs. Take the time to keep your tent in solid working order to prolong its lifespan.

      Apply seam grip epoxy to small pin-holes on the tent floors or walls. Seam grip epoxy takes several hours to soak in and dry. Apply the seam grip as if you were using a thick marker, keeping the tip on the holes and smearing the fluid into the fabric.

      Isolate rips along the tent wall or floor. Cut a patch the size of the tear or rip with at least 2 inches on either side of the damaged area. Hold the cut edges of the nylon over the lighter flame to melt the stray strands, preventing it from fraying further.

      Apply seam grip epoxy to the backside of the patch and around the rip along the tent. Push the patch onto the damaged area while you pinch the rip together. Let the epoxy dry for a moment while you hold the repair together.

      Hang the tent up to dry, with the patch exposed for air circulation.

      Apply strips of seam tape on small holes along the seams of the tent. Apply an equal length to the opposite side of the seam to ensure the repair is watertight.
