Nalgene Bottle Issues

Nalgene bottles are virtually indestructible, reusable beverage containers. They come in a variety of sizes, designs and colors to suit their customers' diverse needs, preferences and lifestyles. Nalge Nunc International Corporation, which makes Nalgene bottles, began in 1949 designing laboratory equipment. However, by the 1970s, the bottles were discovered to be useful food and beverage storage containers for hikers and campers. Although the bottles are quite sturdy, there are still some issues that you might have with your Nalgene bottle.
  1. Bisphenol A (BPA)

    • In Spring of 2008, Nalgene bottles were found to contain bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical suspected to pose various health risks. The Nalge Nunc International Corporation responded by pulling all containers with BPA from stores, substituting BPA polycarbonate plastic containers with BPA-free alternatives and offering to exchange all previously purchased bottles with BPA for non-BPA bottles. The Nalgene company currently makes bottles with and without BPA, but argues that the amount of BPA in its bottles is negligible and poses no health risk.

    Smell

    • Nalgene bottles sometimes take on unpleasant smells. To prevent this, make sure to clean and dry your bottle between each use. Most bottles are dishwasher safe, but you can also clean your bottle by hand in a sink filled with soapy warm water. A soft-bristled brush may be useful for cleaning your bottle by hand because it will allow you to gently scour the inner surfaces.

    Broken Cap

    • Sometimes the plastic caps on Nalgene bottles break, either causing a leak or making it easy to lose the top. If this happens, you can order a replacement cap from the Nalge company at: http://store.nalgene.com/category-s/34.htm.

    Breaking and Leaking

    • Although Nalgene bottles are quite durable, one may break or crack under extreme conditions. If you believe that conditions that caused damage to your bottle can be considered normal wear and tear, and that the damage was due to a defect in the materials or manufacturing, then you should contact the Nalge Nunc International Corporation and request an exchange or refund.
