How to Measure a Snowmobile Cover

Snowmobiles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which is why it's important to properly measure your machine to get an accurately fitted cover. Snowmobile covers can greatly extend the life and mobility of your machine. Extensive exposure to UV rays, tree sap, moisture and other elements can damage the exterior and interior of your machine, both mechanically and aesthetically, so it is important that you find a cover that fits properly. Snowmobile covers offer water, UV and mildew resistance to greatly increase the life of your machine and keep it safe during trailering and storage.

Determine the sizing method of the company or brand you are purchasing. There are two ways that snowmobile cover manufacturers produce size charts. One way of measuring includes the front ski while the other doesn't. Check the size chart guidelines on the company's website or look at the product description and details to help determine their specific guidelines.

Measure the length of your snowmobile including the ski. Using a measuring tape, measure from the tip of the front ski--it sticks out further than the nose of the machine--to the back of the seat bed or bumper, whichever projects further. Be sure you are measuring from the longest protrusion on each end and keep in mind that you'll be measuring at a slight angle from front to back. Add 2 inches to the number and write it down.

Measure the length of your snowmobile excluding the ski. Take your measuring tape and measure from the nose of the snowmobile to the back of the seat bed or bumper. You are measuring from the widest extension on either end of the snowmobile's body. Add 2 inches to this number and write it down.

Double-check your work. Because there are no width measurements to consider when purchasing a snowmobile cover, you may want to also consider universal measurements. Snowmobiles come in different sizes but for the most part they fit into generic size categories. For example, one-person snowmobiles usually range in size from 100 to 115 inches and require a small cover, while two-person machines range in size between 115 inches and 130 inches and would likely require a medium cover.

Check customer reviews. If you're purchasing your cover online, check the reviews from other customers and see what they have to say about the sizes. Do the covers run big or do they run small? Customers who have already made purchases are your best bet for accuracy in listed size charts. If you're buying in a local outdoor shop, ask the customer service agents to help you determine the correct size and be sure there is an exchange and return policy in place before purchasing.
