How to Tie a Figure Nine Knot

The figure nine is a variation on the classic figure eight. It is mainly used in industrial rope access for connecting rappel lines to anchors. With all major benefits of a figure eight, it has the added advantage of being easier to untie.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a bite, or fold, of rope.

    • 2

      Twist the bite around itself.

    • 3

Continue twisting the bite until it has made one and a half rotations. A full twist would be a figure eight, the extra half twist makes a figure nine.

    • 4

Pass the bite through the doubled loop above the twists.

    • 5

Pull the bite through until the knot is tight.
