      Choose your instructor carefully. You'll initially be totally dependent on his or her skill. If you go with a friend, be sure that friend truly knows what he or she is talking about.

      Read about climbing before and after your initial experiences. Read all the climbing how-to books that you can get your hands on. There is much to learn and no single book has it all.

      Watch other climbers - beginners and experts - to see what you can learn from their actions.

      Ask questions. Ask other climbers why and how they do things when you see a technique you don't understand.

      Read the climbing magazines. "Climbing" and "Rock & Ice" both have technique sections useful to climbers of all skills. Remember, education is a continuing process; always try to learn.
