1
Read the surface. Probably the most critical elements in building an anchor is to assess the cliff you are about to climb, the type of climbing it is best suited for and the location you plan to fashion your anchor. Are there any obstacles or dangers in your course? Does your current experience level match with your intended climb? Have you taken everything under consideration to minimize potential risks in your climb?

2
Consider the other climbers. More often than not, especially if you’re relatively new to the sport, you’ll not be climbing solo. When setting out to decide the placement of your anchor, you really need to bear in mind the experience level of the other members of your crew. Very rarely will you climb with a group of people who have the exact same strengths and weaknesses as you, so don’t establish an anchor that solely plays to your talents alone.
-
3
Construct an anchor with primary and secondary anchors, equalizing them above the point to which the rope is attached. This will distribute your weight evenly over the anchor system, making for a solid and secure structure of support, not only for the climb itself but also for a fall.
-
4
Check and double-check your work. Check out the rock around it, making sure it is solid, the anchors are secured and equalized and that no one anchor is taking the brunt of the weight.
-
5
Climb with an experienced climber. This is of the most paramount things to do. No matter how much you may think you’ve learned or think you know about the sport, if you haven’t any practical experience, all your education will do you no good. If you climb with an instructor, especially in the beginning stages of your climbing venture, he will be able to check your anchor after you’ve built the system, tell you how you can improve on it and correct any possible mistakes.
