How to Spin on Roller Skates

While recreational roller skaters prefer to keep their wheels on the pavement, extreme skaters perform aerial jumps and spinning tricks. Aggressive inliners and quad skaters utilize ramps to fly over obstacles in the riding terrain. Practice the spinning technique on flat ground to get comfortable with the necessary movements. Many novice roller skaters make the mistake of trying to learn the 180 degree spin first. This trick involves riding backwards and requires advanced balance and control. Start out with the 360 degree spin.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wheels of one of your roller skates horizontally on the pavement. Push off the wheels to thrust yourself forward. Repeat the process until you reach a comfortable speed.

    • 2

Bend your knees to balance your rollerskating stance. Rotate your shoulders to the left or right. Extend your legs to jump vertically off the pavement.

    • 3

Raise your knees to increase the airtime of your jump. Turn your head in the direction of the spin while keeping your eyes open. Lower the skates as your body completes a 360 degree spin.

    • 4

Bend your knees as the wheels touch down onto the pavement. Practice the 360 on flat ground until you can land it consistently. Grab the side of your skates while spinning to add a variation to the trick.
