How to Break in Roller Hockey Skates

Leather might be more expensive than vinyl, but as a skate material it’s also more durable and allows the foot to breathe during wear. Unfortunately, roller hockey skates constructed from leather require a process of breaking in that can be painful to your feet. Speed through the break-in process by heat molding your skates and using them daily so you can more quickly experience the other benefits of your leather roller skates.

    • 2

      Turn off the oven.

    • 3

Place roller hockey skates on a baking sheet. Make sure the skates are laced loosely.

    • 4

Slide the baking sheet onto the center rack. Let the skates sit for 8-10 minutes.

    • 5

Remove roller hockey skates from the oven. Let them sit for a moment

    • 6

Feel inside the boot of your roller hockey skates to make sure there are no hot metal pieces. If there are, let the skates sit for another moment.

    • 7

Carefully put on your roller hockey skates. Tighten the laces as much as possible and tie a knot. Sit for about 15 minutes while wearing the skates.

    • 8

Untie your skates and place them in a secure location. Let them sit for 24 hours.

    • 9

Use your roller hockey skates daily during the break-in period. Skate for about 30 minutes five days a week. Depending on leather quality, the break-in period might be anywhere from a few days to four weeks.
